I don't know, John -- always happy to have honor :), and glad you have it working better, but...something's still not right. For one thing, I set Desktop = .T., and it has no effect for me, the way I have my app set up. For another, I've never seen a disabled Close button at any time in vfp, unless closable is .F. I think your top-level method still needs some adjusting...
Have you tried screen = off in config, and removing the _screen.hide? and maybe setting focus to something on top-level before launching modal?
