I would say the real-world limit is the 2 gig limit set by most OSes. I consult at a company that has alot of large tables and around 150 active users. Speed is fine - but that is using a 100-base Ethernet topology. The network server and hard-drive array may also make a difference. Of course, all your searches should be based on indexes.
