I have an application in the client's hands and he has started
entering data into one of the main files. In the meantime I
have made some changes to the structure of ANOTHER table in the
app's database and would like to upgrade the system for him.

So can I do this, and how? One approach I'll be testing is to
zap my tables and put blank files in a setup folder, then build
an executable, run the setup wizard to get the setup .cab files.
Then back up the populated tables the client has been using,
install the new version into the same client directory, over the existing one.

Then copy the populated table into the client directory. I
think this means the .cdx file as well as the .dbf file. Will
this work for a table whose structure is unchanged? Is a copy
operation sufficient for this?

Here's a problem I don't face yet but am curious about. If the
client had populated the table whose structure I've changed (I
added one field), could I repopulate the changed table after
installing a blank version with APPEND FROM oldTableName?
