Performance is perfectly acceptable on the LAN, on dial-up it is comparable to PC Anywhere. Citrix (and now T/S) use a different technique than PC Anywhere, on Citrix, the server transmits the window handles, properties, and data and recreates them on the client side via API calls. But VFP screens are bitmapped in memory (except for OCX controls), so they have to transmit by pixel like pc anywhere.
For performance, make sure the 'Cache bitmaps to disk' check is on the client, it will speed up vfp screens.
