I don't know about the desktop pricing. However, I can't imagine it would be more than 200 dollars or so. There is also something called the MSDE (Microsoft Data Engine), which is a super-super stripped down version of SQL-Server, but it is SQL-Server nonetheless. Supposedly, it can be distributed royalty free....

BTW, SQL-Server Desktop is for 95/98 and NT workstation. Only NT Server can run the Standard/Enterprise editions of SQL-Server.
