Well, "general" is bad for anything but displaying. There's nothing wrong with using SET COLLATE TO "MACHINE" to search for some records but use a general index to display them in an international order. If you activate an index with SET ORDER TO, it doesn't do any harm, even if it has been created with GENERAL, AFAIK.
