>Hi Bob, You should remember that America is not a Country. I means Canada, Dom. Republic, Mexico, etc. it's part of America. You're American Too.

It is certainly true in one sense that every inhabitant of the Western Hemiphere is an American. Now it no problem to refer to the "USA" instead of "America". However I know of no other generally acceptable way to refer to us citizens of the USA then as Americans.

"Yankees" or "Yanks" would be understood all around the world but would be ambiguous at home. You see I'm from "Dixie" (the states south of the Mason-Dixon line which attempted to secede from the "Union"), and down here, the term "Yankees" has a very definite meaning. However as soon as you go further north than Virginia, most of the inhabitants will tell you that "Yankees" are from New England.

"Turtle Islanders" would include Canadians and Central Americans for sure.

"Columbians" is already taken, and even if it wasn't, you would have a far better claim to that term than we would, since Columbus never set foot within the borders of the USA.

"Western usurpers" would be fairly accurate. That would exclude most of South and Central America where the indegenous peoples were assimilated rather than being shipped off to reservations. Canadians could make a last ditch effort to avoid that label because of their recent decision to give the northern most Inuits their own province. Nanuvut, right?

Any suggestions?

Peter Robinson ;-)
