I just made a short test:

A 1000 times loop of

AFIELDS()
ASCAN()
ASUBSCRIPT()

takes about 0.5 seconds on a table with 5 fields. Computer: 486DX4/120, 24MB RAM, Win95, VFP 3.0.

It doesn't look so bad.
