>I need to find an easy way to make changes in my production database (structure mainly) with the changes in my development database. I would like to find a way to compare the two databases and generate a .prg file with the needed ALTER TABLE, CREATE TALBE type statements needed to make the modifications. Then I could edit the .prg file to add any other steps that may be needed like loading some tables or converting data etc… Got any Ideas?
Stonefield Database Toolkit handles the issue of updating tables, views and the like through a set of metadata tables - I've used it to update systems in the field successfully with very few problems. it provides a number of added benefits, like more reliable mechanisms to pack and rebuild indexes and a limited table repair facility, and a set of useful and easily expanded extensions to the DBC. Most of the commercial frameworks available now have hooks to allow the use of SDT in place of their own native mechanisms. It's paid for itself many times over for me.
