No, I have been avoiding indexing because of the preformance hit at startup. Cetin's suggestion helps with the initial record (getting the append into the when) and Bruce's suggestion about appending from a seperate control and then setting focus seems to work so I'm guessing that somewhere in the process of binding the view to the grid it is straightening this out. I think that what I am trying should work but, either I am missing some step in the process that is handled automatically by getting focus from outside of the grid or I am trying to be too tricky and may have to fall back on a seperate add button.
