The UT interface is HTML, so pairs of "greater than" and "less than" symbols are interpreted as HTML tags. If what's between the tags in unknown to the browser, it's left blank.
You can write the HTML special characters for these symbols if you need to: ampersand L T semicolon for "less than", and ampersand G T semicolon for "greater than". And now, working without a net, I'll try it on your code (drum roll please...)
