Most probably a big chunk of the businesses these programmers work for are still developing applications with non-visual tools. I think I remember a thread a while back that stated that only a few big companies in some European country (I don't recall which one) could afford to upgrade to 32-bit windows platforms because of the hardware requirements on them. Hence, the necessity to write more lines of code.

In a totally unrelated matter, I will quote Gerald Weinberg's (I think that's his name) father: "We may run out of food or water or money, but we will never run out of reasons" :)
