It really isn't a good idea. By combining the data and log segments your administrative tasks become extremely difficult. The only other thing that I could recommend is checking to see what segment SQL Server allocated the extra 300MB. Try running sp_helpdb database_name. You'll get a list of the allocations and what segment they belong to. My guess is that the 300MB has been allocated to data. If memory serves me correct you have to extend the log to a new device. Man it's been a long time since I've taught a SQL 6.5 course.
