I have experienced the Error Reading from File(1104) and Error writing to File (1105) extensively. After working with Microsoft for several months a solution was found. The problem was prevelent at sites running Windows NT 4.0 as the file server and Windows 95/98 as the workstation. There is an article which describes the solution at:

The workaround involves disabling direct hosting. To turn off direct hosting, disable the NWLink IPX/SPX binding in Windows NT Server service. After this is done, enable NWLink with NetBIOS on the client computer.
