OCX are (very basically) OLE objects. The difference to ActiveX (besides of the name) is that ActiveX provides a lower level interface and smaller memory footprint. They also provide a bit stricter design standard. Internally, ActiveX use a different model.
It's a lot more complex than this, but it should provide the first answers to everybody's first questions.
