Just what the doctor ordered: another layer of indirection! Worked like a charm. By the way, in my code I had

lcSouceFile = File_Name
COPY FILE &lcFile TO &lcDestDir

So maybe the variable name typo screwed it up. I've got a half gig network download happening now, so I'll have to try it later.
