Look for the "FILE:MDACCON.EXE Using Connection Strings w/ ODBC/OLEDB/ADO/RDS" article in MSDN. It explains a lot about connection strings and how to get them right.

Anyway, Bob Archer is right, you still need the ODBC drivers even if you don't use DSNs.
