I would not use the root directory as the temp working areas (c:\) - I seem to remember that above a threshold value of directories/files, performance will suffer quite badly: see if that helps.

There were some problems with W95 networking for which one of the files needed to be updated (VREDIR I think) but whether that's true for your setup I don't know: check the MS site.
