What commands exactly did you issue in the command window? My array very definately does NOT come up empty in both 5.0a and 6. In case I didn't cut & paste correctly in my previous message here it is again:

oShellObj = CREATEOBJ('Shell.Application')
local x(1)
?amembers(x,oshellobj,1)

It's very important to pass 1 as the third parameter to AMEMBERS. HTH
