I'd start by running SCANDISK against the local drive(s) and defragmenting the drive(s) containing the swap file and shared components. There are diagnostic tools for Win98 in the System Information applet (Start Menu /Programs /Accessories /System Tools /System Information, on the Tools tab, has half a dozen useful diagnostic and component verification applets, like the Version Conflict Manager and Signature Verifier, that will help pick up stuff that other installs may have messed up.)
