If you use an INI file for your server/volume names, you never need to worry about portability - just change the details in the INI file (or lookup.dbf). Performance shouldn't be an issue - maintaining and being able to port your application are higher priority (so long as performance doesn't suffer which it won't here).

I go for UNC wherever possible!
