You just have to fix the table. Unfortunately the C0000005 error doesn't give any reasonable information, so you just have to try to figure out the problem yourself.
In this case, a corrupt FPT will not stop the table from opening (as you found) but WILL prevent other actions. Neither a feature nor a bug, I should think, just that opening a file doesn't check the validity of any record, but a SQL DOES look at multiple records and finds the problems.
I'd LOVE to see both VFP5 and VFP6 get better error handling to replace the C000005 errors!
