So what "format" would that data being accessed by ADO be in? What would the speed, capacity, flexibility, cost, etc. be for that "format"???

Not being anywhere close to gurudom of any kind, and most especially deliberately staying away from anything 'windows-internal', I would guess that Windows "objects" have lots more events and methods than are available from VB. I'd guess that VB has such a limited set to keep it simple.
