I do this all the time; the easiest way to approach it is to get a wedge device, which is a barcode scanner that sits in-line with the keyboard, and acts like a keyboard when scanning. Create a data entry form, and when you get to the field that needs to read the barcode, trigger the wedge to read it, and it gets entered into your form directly.

We use exactly this trick to link up picked orders with sjhipping instructions in our warehouse; the pick slip has a barcode, which contains the invoice id of the order; when it gets to the shipping station, the shipping clerk reads the barcode into a VFP app, which then pulls over the information needed to complete shipment - method of shipping, address labels, etc.
