It varies from provider to provider; in my case (Bell Atlantic Mobile), for $9/month, I'm provided with an email address for my CDMA (dual mode analog/digital) cell phone; if email is sent to that account, the first 160 characters of the body of the message show up in my phones message base. A similar option is available from Bell Atlantic for some of their pager systems. This is specific to Bell Atlantic Mobile's CDMA phone system; Sprint's PCS system uses another method, and there are any number of methods being used by various pager services as well.
