if vfp has nothing to do with these, then why do i get correct behavior
in vfp 5.0? anyone curious that has both vfp 3.0 and 5.0 is welcome
to try the following recipe:

1) set display to 256 colors, any resolution, any monitor, any driver, any video card
2) create a form
3) place text and edit box objects
4) set background color on both objects to 220,220,220
5) set margin on text object to a fat 10 pixels for fun
6) compare vfp3 vs. vfp5 behavior

i have tried every possible trick, and a lot of random and rancid
cursing in the direction of redmond. it's still broken.

it could be a win-api related bug that vfp5 somehow works around or
avoids. vfp3 simply refuses to use dithered colors in certain objects.
