>It depends on the software that you're using - the two server-based backup products that I work with, Seagate BackupExec and CA-ArcServe both have client backup software for their server based products. Using NT's native backup, I can back up shared folders on other machines by explicit share name (IOW, if I have a workstation ED with my C:\ shared as C$, I can have NT backup go back up \\ED\C$). I suggest using a server-based backup program that can handle client backup, since without client backup capability, you probably won't be able to back up things like the registry off workstations, just shared directory trees. Neither of them is cheap, but they offer considerably more functionality than is probably in the bundled backup softweare with the drive.

Some others to explore include UltraBac and NovaBack from NovaStor - Ultrabac allows you to download a 45 day evaluation copy from their web site www.ultrabac.com, and is designed specifically to work in SQL Server environments.

Server based products which you have mentioned can be used from win 95 workstations ???

My idea is to fix drive on server, give 2-3 catridges to each user (only 8-10 users), when they want to take backup, they shud simply put the catridge in server and come to workstation and take the backup from there..

Main reason behind that is, all the data is on their local hard disk and from their they want to copy it.. Plus nobody has given share for their whole drive (c$)

There is a software called Colorado Backup, came with dat drive, Can that be used for this purpose ??
