As far as the grid is concerned, I had the client on the phone when the child data was not in the grid. She exited the form, and went back in - still no data. She then went in to another form, exited, and went back to the parent/child grid, and there was the data.

This is really strange. Could the index or the relationship be somewhat flaky?
