>>It's in Indonesia. It has a brutal regime which is violating human rights and conducting appalling bloodshed in an attempt to impose their rule on the indigenous people. But as East Timor has no oil or minerals to exploit and is not on a strategic trade route the rest of the world is quietly ignoring it.

You're welcome.
Interestingly enough, I'm English, (living in Boston MA)and I only heard about the "situation" in East Timor through Private Eye, a scurrilous satirircal magazine which sometimes prints good stuff. Since then there have been a few mentions on the BBC World Service, but I have seen or heard nothing in the US media. Like I said - no oil or we'd have had "Operation Timor Storm" or something.

A bipolar theory does not neatly describe a continuum.

Before millenium: chop wood, draw water. After millenium: chop wood, draw water.
