If you don't mind using a third party product... We use Merge-Purge by Arc Tangent. (805)965-7277. It is pretty good at catching the "almost identical" records, and is fast. Some of its options include the ability to display matching records on screen or report, and the ability to pick which records to keep and which to mark for deletion.
