In answer to your first question:
MAPI.Session is the Outlook session (like opening outlook), MAPI.Messages.1 is the message object (like creating a message). You can send as many messages you like in one session.
I don't know about your second question. I can't see how a person gets a notification without email being open as, without it open, they won't know when a message has been received. Unless there is some process open somewhere on their PC.
