Just a couple of $.02 here, I checked with a coworker who lives in Palm Springs. We're located just east of Los Angeles and I've lived in both San Diego and L.A. (L.A. since '61, San Diego for about 8 yrs when in Navy). From Palm Springs you'd probably be best to go to I-15, then either take it towards San Diego. That will take you towards the other cutoff routes to the coast like Oceanside, La Jolla, Torrey Pines, etc. or just take it to I-8 and then south to Mission Bay (which is where Sea World is located) and there's a nice park down there. Other option, take I-15 to I-91 west towards L.A. which will bring you near the coast and then the 55 or I-5 or I-605 will take you south towards the beaches of San Clemente, Huntington Beach, Bolsa Chica State Beach, Seal Beach, etc. Both of these will avoid going through downtown L.A., but if that doesn't bother you, you can take the 60 west towards L.A. and head to I-10 and take it west till it ends and be in Santa Monica (check out the pier, a very popular place). All in all, the crowds and parking will probably be a problem, but it's the price we all pay to "poke our toes into the Pacific". HTH and hope you enjoy your time here. I agree with the previous post, you might want to plan an extra day or two, more enjoyable that way and the beach isn't quite as crowded during the week days.
