John,
As Ed stated out perfectly it's not a way of copy protection (you are after it for copy protection I think).
We have our methods of copy protections sometimes combined more than one methods but telling anyone of them in a public place would totally make them useless :(
I can give you few hints on simple protections leaving rest to your imaginations (and obviously changed my own method using these) :
-Generally files sit in less place than allocated for them
-There are disk areas nothing else but only viruses might use
-Diskettes are not formatted to a capacity that they could really have
-When an executable is loaded into memory it doesn't need to be on disk anymore
etc
