Hi,
Where I work, we have a server with the project and all associated files in a project folder, with subfolders for the components (\dbfs, \prgs, \reports, \forms, etc.). When a programmer is going to work on the project for the first time, the entire folder is copied to the programmer's c: drive. We use a root folder named Software (you can call it what you like). Under this folder, we have a folder for the name of each project. When a module is modified and approved by the boss, a notice is emailed to all other programmers concerning the change, and the modified module is copied to the server where the production version of the app/exe is built. Everyone else copies that module to their local projects. We use MS Word to compare the two source files and show the changes, for documentation and approval purposes (using the Tools|Revisions\Compare menu option, which is worded slightly differently in different versions of Word).

This method works well for us. It is a medium tech alternative to using MS SourceSafe or a similar product.
