I started with 2.6a, so I can't give an authoritative answer, BUT...
1) I'd guess that 2.6a is 2.6 with a service pack applied, and
2) I doubt you'll be able to find 2.6x through normal retail channels considering the age of the product. Someone here may have a source, tho.
