For simple tcp/ip support I would use the current version of Winsock ActiveX control from Visual Studio or Visual Basic, but if you need both DNS and IP support, and better security, etc. I would use something like the Distinct Internet Toolkit from http://www.distinct.com which I have used to great success with Unix platforms.

See http://www.computer-consulting.com/vfptipsa.htm for some code. Their website has the entire object model published for the controls. You can totally code your app with their free download to be sure everything works before paying them the $400 for the complete tookit.
