I’m new at ODBC and having some concept problems in setting up a VFP 6 system to report against some Btrieve data. I have an ODBC driver from Pervasive Software and actually got the system working, but not how I want it to work.

From the ODBC Data Sources icon in the Control Panel, I set up a “User DSN” that works. My form comes up. My report reports. But this only works for me on my machine according to the help files. Next step up (next tab) is “System DSN” – any user (not just me) on my machine. Still no good, I have a multi user / machine environment so “File DSN” looks good – any user, any machine.

The defaults kept wanting to put my MyName.DSN on my machine in the “windows\ODBC\Data Sources” folder which I found unusual, but I convinced it instead to put MyName.DSN on the server with the data so that all the users could get at it.

Now when I start up the app, some new irritating things happen. I am asked where MyName.DSN is, and then I have to press a login button on another form. This was all automatic when I used “User DSN”. I think I’ve done something fundamentally wrong. Any ideas? Also the preamble should not be trusted; it’s just my ideas on what might be going on.
