>Win2000 was originally known as NT 5. Actually, I think it was known as Cairo before that. It's apparently going to replace both NT and Win 98. There will probably be two versions, one mainly for home use, the other for business users. Windows 98 is supposedly the end of the line for the 16/32 bit hybrid OS. Win2000 will take care of a lot of the features in Win 98 that are missing from NT (power management and plug-and-play are two major features). Win2000 won't have the same level of compatibility with 16-bit applications that Win 98 does.

Acutally, Microsoft has backed off of the Win2000 will replace Win98. There will be at least one more version of Win9x, or what ever they end up calling it.
There are several versions of Win2000 planned. You can get more information from the Microsoft web site. Win2000 is currently in Beta 3, which turns out to be Release Candidate 1.
