Hi Ed,
thanks for the exhaustive reply. Fortunately, my needs are a bit more limited. Italy is a strange country: for the average user it is difficult to understand why software should be paid at all and completely incomprehensible that it can cost more than the PC on which it runs. The moral is that you cannot take anything for granted. It's a jungle out there so keeping things simple is of paramount importance. I try to stay as far away as possible from activex and the like, chances being that the operating system on the target machine will be a mish mash of languages and versions (We don't like to pay for software but we are all software collectors: we MUST have the last version of everything.) Unfortunately, I haven’t been able, yet, to replace the TreeView with something easy to use and maintain but I will sleep better when I do. And this partly explains why I am still tied to vfp 5.0.
So, as you can see, my needs are simpler. I do use SDT and Wise installer. And CD for the initial installation and a variety of methods for subsequent updates, none of which I am happy with. I made a search on WSH and found the address you mentioned for the tutorial in pdf format. It is nice but, will I ever have the courage to deploy it? I doubt. Things are already difficult as they are and I would hate to have to provide an installation procedure to install the setup system.

Why do you need to be sure of this?
Thanks again for your reply: it’s nice to have an insight on how things should be.
