According to a very brief statement in the new book "Inside SQL Server 7.0" from MS Press (Soukup/Delaney), on NT it employs all of the features of NT to compliment its security and to simplify it, while for Win9x it exclusively relies on its own built-in security. So, for Win95/98 it is necessary, for instance, to supply an ID and password on each connection.

I presume that MSDE would operate similarly.
