I got that part of it working fine (good articles by George Tasker, 08/98, and Hank Fay, 09/98 in Advisor). What I want to know is, is there a way Word can display and set the focus back to the VFP app through VBA?

VBA would allow SetForeGroundWindow but you don't need it since VFP itself has native activate.
Check mailmerge class in files\classes section.
