If using NT/NT Workstation, and you have Visual C++ installed (via Visual Studio), I have been able to break the process by bringing up the task manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL), going to the Processes tab. Then right click on the process and select "Debug". This will bring the program up in VC++ and you can cancel it from there.
