In addition to the basic form of the barcode, many barcode applications require the computation of a check digit as the last character in a barcode value - this is used as an error-detection mechanism, like a checksum on a transmitted data packet. Or like the check digit on certain part numbers of identifiers (in the book industry, the ISBN of a book has a check digit in the last position as an aid to detection of misentered data.)
IOW, there's more to the
content of the data written with the barcode font, at least in some environments. Since you haven't told us anything about what the barcoding is used for, or how important it is that you pick up misreads.
(IOW, sometimes there's more to this than just writing the data you think should be in the barcode...)
