But when I go into Control Panels, Add/Remove Software, in WIndows Setup, underneath Exchange or whatever it happens to be, there's not even the ability to install Internet Mail. There's MS Exchange and the MS Mail service but not Internet Mail service.

Yes, I've come across this. I downloaded the MSExchange (messaging)update from their web-site (the one that originally added Internet Mail I think) MSEXUPUS.EXE, I think it is called.

The method I use is as follows.

Install the update (even if they already have exchange/messaging installed).

If this doesn't work:-

Perform a Find File for all files like MAPI*.*
Move (and preserve) these files to a folder somewhere (in case you need to restore things).
Reboot the machine.
Install MSEXUPUS.EXE (or whatever it's called)

You should now be able to set up Internet mail.

What I have found on new machines and those with IE4+ / Outlook installed is that there are a number of MAPI dlls which prevent installation of the Internet Mail service (by design or accident I don't know) and unless you remove these, the update installation appears to detect that they are more modern and not overwrite them.

Windows 98 is supplied with Messaging on the CD but it doesn't include the internet mail component.

Your clients may not take kindly to this but I've performed this surgery on a number of PC's (about 10) all with different combinations of Windows versions, Outlook / OE, IE, Netscape, etc., with no problems.

You might look at upgrading your application at some point to handle Internet mail directly or communicate with CDO, Active Messaging or whatever it's called this week.
