Paul, thanks for the response. It is now working but I have one more slight problem.

Another command button on the form allows the user to exit the form without entering the data into the database. With the valid event the button that releases the form does not work because the text box input has a .f. for valid and will not loose focus.

any suggestions? Thanks again
