This is a re-post from a week or so ago. I got no response earlier. I was hoping that it was because many people were on the road to Devcon. Here's the question.

Does anyone use the CLOB datatype with Oracle 8 and have it working as expected?

For loose text I can use the LONG datatype but only one LONG is allowed per table. Oracle's Doc recommends the new CLOB datatype but I cannot seem to get it to work, either from Oracle's SQL Worksheet tool or from an ODBC connection.

I can CREATE TABLE with CLOBs. I can INSERT text into CLOBs but I cannot SELECT from a table with CLOBs.

The basic problem I am trying to solve is having multiple fields in a table that allow loose text. I know I can use large VarChar fields as an alternative, [ VarChar(4000) is the largest I think ], but I was hoping to be successful with the CLOB datatype.

Has anyone come up against this issue? Any ideas?

Thanks,

Guy
