I always run my reports of a selection cursor, thus one record per detail line, but rather non-normalized data. This does not count report lines: if the data is from a memo field and expands to cover several lines on paper it would count as one record.

I'm not sure what you mean by "paging on the data description rather than the line count."

If you got many too many pages it sounds like you are using 2 related tables and counting records in the wrong one. There are also the "on entry" and "on exit" functions in the VFP6 report writer. I have not used them.
