HTML describes a visual layout of data. XML describes the semantic of data.
As I see it, XML and HTML are "seen" together because they use markups and because they are both related to Internet. In fact, XML is just a data(base) format and it has nothing to do with the Internet, besides that it is suitable for data transfer across the web.
But they are related just as much as the .dbf format (semantic description) and the VGA standard (visual layout description). True, they are both used on computers! :)
