To expand on what Vlad said:
that depends highly on the client application. Most ActiveX controls have a Version Generic ProgIG (Server.Control) and a version Specific ProgID (Server.Control.1). If the client program that needs the old control references the Version generic ProgID instead of the version specific one, you are out of luck, because the registry will return the location of the newest control.
