Yeah, but I was playing fast and loose hoping they wouldn't be calculated until used, thereby allowing me to pass some control information gathered when the previous record was printed, and use that information to control the printing of the current record. Details are in my reply to Nick. By what you are saying, VFP recalcs any report variables just prior to printing each record, which makes a lot of sense for record variables that accumulate and are only printed at the end of the report.

What I want is a way of knowing what value was printed for a field in the previous line and use that information to determine how the current line gets printed.

Do you know of any means for achieving that end?
